MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) Guide
MONA: Art That Will Challenge and Intrigue You Guide
Prepare to have your perceptions challenged at MONA, the Museum of Old and New Art, a world-renowned institution located just outside of Hobart. This isn't your typical museum experience; MONA is a labyrinthine wonderland of art, ranging from ancient Egyptian artifacts to provocative contemporary installations. It's a place where the boundaries between art, architecture, and experience blur, leaving a lasting impression on every visitor. MONA was founded by David Walsh, a professional gambler and art collector, and opened in 2011. The museum's architecture is as striking as the art it houses, carved into the sandstone cliffs of the Berriedale peninsula. The subterranean design creates a sense of mystery and discovery as you navigate its winding corridors and hidden chambers. The collection is deliberately eclectic and often controversial, designed to provoke thought and spark conversation. A visit to MONA is an immersive experience. Download "The O," MONA's device that replaces traditional museum labels, providing information and commentary on the artworks. Explore the museum's various levels, discover hidden installations, and take your time to contemplate the art. You can also enjoy a meal at one of MONA's restaurants, sample local wines at the Moorilla winery, or relax by the river. Don't miss the opportunity to experience the unique blend of art, architecture, and Tasmanian culture that MONA offers. Tasmanian cuisine is well represented at MONA's restaurants, with fresh seafood and local produce featuring prominently on the menus. Moorilla winery, located on the MONA grounds, offers wine tastings and tours, showcasing the region's cool-climate wines.
